Once more Penny Forest and the boys take to the bush. Up on the Tableland on the world's largest cattle station life is exciting but not everyone is happy with that "Yank" cook.
There's a showdown coming.
The boys are lined up in the yard to watch the fun. The engineer has vowed to run the cook off the station.
He dropped from the truck, face flaming as the anger took hold again. “To hell with this! I’ll have me tucker sack and more or know the reason why. No damn woman’s going to send me up the track hungry.”
“Steady on!” Mike interjected.
“To hell with you too!” Ross roared.
Mike shrugged. “Give it another go then. I got two quid says she roasts your backside proper.”
Ross swung back. “Yeah, well you just watch me, mate. This time I won’t muck about.”
With that he strode across the hard packed yard. Mike gave a mirthless chuckle then hurried across to the other shops.
“He’s at it again!. “ He called gleefully.”
“Stone the crows. Don’t that bloke ever learn?” Old Tubbs the carpenter asked with a snort. He had become another of Mom’s allies.
“Not bloody likely I’d say.” Mike affirmed.
And so the boys were lined up waiting for the showdown.
In the kitchen Mom was preparing one of her famous eggless cakes. A great square of batter liberally laced with dried fruit and currents.
Outback baking required a certain lack of squeamishness. Most of the food stocks quickly fell victim to the attack of insects and other vermin. Flour grew weevils that needed sifting. Dried fruits attracted ants and quite an assortment of wee bugs. Food was precious, the supplies came in only once every six months if you were lucky. Nothing salvageable could be wasted. So having sifted the flour and mixed the other dry ingredients Mom set about sanitizing the currants.
It was a simple process. The currants went into a bowl and then were treated to a liberal dose of boiling water. In minutes they were both reconstituted and freed of their vermin. The insects forming black, lifeless specks on the top of the water which was then poured off. It was unfortunate that Ross chose this particular moment to re-enter the fray.
He strode through the kitchen door and headed for the pantry. At the sight of him all the girls vanished like mist.
Mom turned from her work and advanced toward the engineer. “What are you doing back here?” She demanded moving to block the pantry door.
“I’ve come for me bloody tucker.” Ross snapped.” Now get the hell out of me way.” With that he gave Mom a shove that sent her staggering.
“How dare you push a woman!” Mom gasped. Then swift as a striking adder she whipped the bowl of currants upward.
Water, currants and bugs flew through the air and hit Ross square in the face. Fortunately the water was no longer boiling. Still it was hot and very sticky. It stuck to his face and drained down his chin onto his shirtfront.
With a howl of anguish Ross turned and bolted from the kitchen, madly swiping at his face and eyes. Dropping the bowl, Mom raced after him. As she came through the door she caught hold of a corn broom and swung it at his retreating backside. Whether she connected or not is questionable but Ross, suddenly aware of his danger in spite of his smarting eyes, leapt out the door into the safety of the yard.
From the gallery old Tubbs gasped in amazement. “Struth, wud yer look at that! She lifted ta bugger right out ta door with her broom. “
At that instant the broom sailed into the yard and struck the fleeing engineer another glancing blow. “Good on yer, Missus!” The boys roared applause then broke into howls of laughter that echoed around the station yard.

A Cockatoo On Our Bonnet Forest Family Goes Bush Book 2 eBook Raym Forbes Reviews

I very much enjoyed this book as it is a very well written part of my husbands family history. The only thing I think could be improved would be to use the actual names of the main characters.
The descriptions of the country, the times, and the people involved, are wonderful and make me feel as if I was there!!
